Hock Kee Kopitiam: A Taste of Nanyang & Local Delights
We recently dined at Hock Kee Kopitiam, nestled in the vibrant Nexus, Bangsar South. With a menu boasting over 150 items, Hock Kee Kopitiam stands out as it seamlessly blends Nanyang and local flavors. It offers a diverse range of options to satisfy every palate.
With the invitation from Hock Kee, we were warmly hosted by the friendly outlet manager, Ray. We tasted Hock Kee’s signature dishes that impressed our taste buds.
Hock Kee Kopitiam’s Signature Dishes:
Seafood Curry Laksa: We plunged into a bowl of Seafood Curry Laksa for a start. It is a combination of mussels, squids, prawns, fish cake, and taupok in a thick, flavorful curry gravy. Asking if would like the laksa spicier, Ray thoughtfully brought us additional chili powder (Hock Kee’s secret recipe according to him) to add into the already rich curry gravy, enhancing its taste and spiciness.
Steamed Hainan Chicken: We then shifted to the Steamed Hainan Chicken. Famed for its melt-in-the-mouth tenderness achieved through the innovative ice soak method. Best enjoyed cold, this dish, accompanied by fragrant rice, shredded ginger, and chili, delivered a harmonious flavors.
Thai Style Egg Tofu: The soft and silky homemade Thai-style egg tofu, complemented by a sweet and sour sauce. We think this is a good palate cleanser with its refreshing taste.
Sunshine Egg Tart and Charcoal Polo Bun: We also tasted a Portuguese-style Sunshine Egg Tart with a crispy exterior and velvety custard. The Charcoal Polo Bun, introduced us for the first time – the coffee butter. It was special and tasty.
For the Drinks: We had two drinks. Namely, Hor Ka Sai, a refreshing blend of coffee and Milo over ice. Then, a hot coffee, served alongside nostalgic fish-shaped cookies, added a touch of childhood nostalgia. Ray shared that Hock Kee’s blend of robusta, arabica, and liberica coffee beans contributed to the rich and aromatic brew for our drinks.
