Grandpa Bak Kut Teh – The Clear Soup BKT
Grandpa Bak Kut Teh or Restoran Grandpa, is another neighborhood restaurant around us that we visited as what we planned to do more this year.
Grandpa Bak Kut Teh has been around way before we started wandering around this area. There must be a reason for its business to be able to stand out from the test of time.
The Menu
Grandpa Bak Kut Teh serves Teochew style Bak Kut Teh which is in clear soup. In contrast to the usual Klang Bak Kut Teh which is in dark heavy taste, Teochew style or the Southern style is lighter in its broth, however equally tasty. Depending on the personal preference, we actually prefer the clear soup version as it is less oily.
The parts of pork are clearly indicated in the menu, easier for people like us who are not familiar with what to do order.
There are many ingredients to choose from to go with the Bak Kut Teh, there are such as the tau fu pok, mushroom, preserved vegetables and etc.
Other than Bak Kut Teh, Granpa Bak Kut Teh is also serving other dishes such as steamed fish, chicken and etc.
The food
During our visit, we ordered a claypot Bak Kut Teh for two pax. We asked for the lean meat part and the friendly staff mentioned to give us the ribs part.
We also added braised eggs, braised tofu and preserved vegetables to go with the meal.
As we went there during dinner, the signature yam rice has sold out. So we opt for fried shallot rice. We may come next round earlier to try their yam rice as the usual Bak Kut Teh in Klang Valley area does not serve yam rice.
The Bak Kut Teh broth as mentioned was in clear soup, had a sweet after taste and the herbal taste was not overly strong. We were expecting more peppery soup but it was not the case. We think that for those who liked the dark broth with strong flavor might not like it.
The portion of meats for two pax was also quite generous, we also found some mushrooms in it.
The preserved vegetables and braised items were ok, nothing too fancy.
The environment and price
The shop is clean and well ventilated. The service was good and the staff was attentive. One thing we like was that the cut red and green chili padi and garlic were fresh even though it was almost toward their closing time. This minor detail proves the thoughtfulness of the restaurant.
The bill came about RM45 for the dinner we had.
Worth returning?
Yes for the clear soup bak kut teh and to try out the yam rice.
